Website: Macys.com and Bloomingdales.com desktop, Mobile Web, iOS and Android.
Problem: Customers want the option to pay for products in installments. Currently, there is no ability to do this at the two brands unless someone has a Macy’s or Bloomingdale’s card. This would require someone to apply for the card, get approved for the card, wait for the card to arrive and then finally use it. Customers want to purchase items right away. Why can’t we let them?
Hypothesis: If we partner with a financing company that allows customers to purchase items right away and then pay it back in installment plans, customers might really enjoy this option. It would also require minimum development from our teams, and be able to be used across multiple platforms such as iOS, Android, Desktop and Mobile Web.
Solution: We partnered with a 3rd Party Financing Company called Klarna who allows customers to purchase items and pay it back in four installments with no interest, unless they miss a payment. Although I was not the PdM who originally wrote the user stories, I jumped in and worked with the Dev Teams and backend PdM to get Klarna live on Macy’s iOS and Android signed in and guest, Bloomingdale’s desktop, mobile web and iOS, all signed in and guest. I had to update stories, tweak some, work with QE to sign off on dozens of stories and team up with the release team to launch the product.
Results: We were able to get the product up across six platforms in a matter of two months. By allowing the customer to get financing, Klarna has brought in over $130MM in revenue in this very short time and has turned out to be quite a success story for the company, not only financially but also in our ability to release code that works.
